Favorite Older Memories
Mark & Carmella (age, mid-60's)
This was from a Luncheon Harbor Cruise in NYC I took Mom on for Mother's Day. As we were boarding, we were stopped halfway up the gangway for a forced photo shot to sell to us at the end of the cruise. Caught by surprise, and not one to succumb to any pressured purchase, Mom gave an "I'm not buying this photo" sneer. However, even though she hated her expression, she bought it anyway because I was in it with her. LOL As much as she cringed at her expression each time she saw it, she always had this displayed in her house because of the memory of the nice day we enjoyed.
Carmella (age, late-50's)
Mom, entertaining with her accordian in her living room.
Carmella (age, late-40's)
Mom, playing with her grandson's Big Wheel at Christmas.
Carmella (age, late-40's)
Mom, testing out her grandson's rocking horse after setting it up in his room at her house.
Our Alzheimer's Journey
Carmella (age 72) on Mother's Day
This was three years before Mom's diagnosis and we were just beginning to see occasional memory incidents that seemed more than normal aging.
Carmella (age 75) visiting the Butterfly Conservatory
Mom with a butterfly on her finger during our visit to the Butterfly Conservatory. This was in the first year of her diagnosis.
Carmella & Mark on her 79th Birthday
This was almost 4 years after diagnosis, Mom was still living alone in her home, although this party was at my brother's house.
Mark & Carmella (age 79) on Thanksgiving Day
Knowing this would be the last Thanksgiving that Mom would still be living in her home, I invited the family, including her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, to celebrate the day at a local restaurant so we could focus on her and each other rather than cooking and cleaning. Almost everyone was able to come.
Father Brunton & Carmella (a few months shy of age 81) at an outdoor summer concert
Mom could always make Father Brunton laugh with her witty comebacks, and he, of course, loved to egg her on.
Mark & Carmella on her 81st Birthday
This was about 18 months after entering the dementia unit of the nursing home.
Carmella (age 82) & Mark on Easter Sunday
This was 3 years after entering the dementia unit (and 7 years after diagnosis) — we had Easter dinner at my brother's house.
Auntie Ellie, Mark & Carmella (just shy of age 83) at an outdoor summer concert
This was 3½ years after entering the dementia unit. We took advantage of another outdoor concert a block away at the Assisted Living facility on our same campus.
Auntie Ellie, Carmella (on her 84th Birthday) & Mark
This is my favorite funny picture. After trying to get Mom to smile for several photos, I had the bright idea to tickle her side under the table. Instead of a smile, we got a scowl, which made my aunt and me laugh so hard. I have this picture framed at home because no matter how deep of a moment of sadness I may feel for her loss, a glance at this photo always makes me laugh.
Mark & Carmella (age 85) on Easter Sunday
This was 5 years after entering the dementia unit (and 10 years after diagnosis).
Carmella on her 87th Birthday & Auntie Ellie
I love this picture, both for the visible connection between them and because it was the last time my aunt was still alive for my mother's birthday.
Mark & Carmella on her 88th Birthday
This was a somber birthday celebration as we were both missing Auntie Ellie.
Carmella (age 88) on Thanksgiving Day
I'm just about to feed Mom her full course Thanksgiving dinner I had cooked and pureed for her.
Carmella (age 88) on Easter Sunday
Pretty in pink on Easter, including her pink bunny earrings.
Carmella (age 88) on Mother's Day
This was Mom's last Mother's Day, about two months before she passed away.
Carmella (age 88) on 4th of July
Mom had been winding down for about a month but remained comfortable — this was just three days before she passed away.
